What exactly is mental clutter—and how does it affect adults with ADHD? If your mind feels overloaded with ideas, worries, or an endless stream of “shoulds,” this episode of ADHD Support Talk Radio is for you.

I’m Tara McGillicuddy, and I’m joined once again by ADHD productivity coach Lynne Edris. Together, we take a deep dive into the many different forms of mental clutter—and we share simple, ADHD-friendly ways to get it under control.

🌀 Mental clutter doesn’t always look the same. Sometimes it’s emotional noise. Sometimes it’s creative idea overload. Sometimes it’s just a brain that won’t stop spinning long enough to sleep. Whatever it looks like for you, the first step is identifying it—and then figuring out how to manage it in a way that actually works for your ADHD brain.

🎧 In this episode, we cover:

✅ What “mental clutter” really means for people with ADHD—and how it shows up differently for everyone
✅ Why getting clear on the type of clutter you’re dealing with is key to solving it
✅ How task management, idea capture, and emotional overwhelm can all contribute to a cluttered mind
✅ Simple strategies to capture and retrieve ideas (because retrieval is often more important than organization!)
✅ ADHD-friendly tools like ChatGPT and color-coded systems that help reduce mental load
✅ The importance of self-care (sleep, hydration, movement) in calming mental chaos
✅ When emotional clutter means it’s time to reach out to a mental health professional

🔧 Some real-world ADHD tips we talk about:

🗂️ Don’t just capture your ideas—make sure you can find them again.
Whether it’s notebooks, voice memos, or digital tools, if your system isn’t searchable or trusted, your brain won’t let go.

🧠 Think about retrieval first.
What will your future self be thinking when you’re trying to find that file, idea, or list? Name things with that in mind. Use keyword-rich file names and even leave yourself “breadcrumb” notes.

🧘‍♀️ Clutter isn’t just physical—it can be emotional, relational, or digital.
ADHD minds often get stuck in looping thoughts or worry spirals. Emotional overload can be just as disruptive as physical mess.

💬 Not all mental clutter can be “organized away.”
Sometimes what we really need is rest, boundaries, or therapy. Getting help is a strength, not a weakness.
